Inspiration | Lifestyle - 3 Quotes That Help Me Get Motivated
I’m a reader. Like a reader reader. Like an I-have-14-books-crammed-onto-a-tiny-Ikea-stool-on-my-bedside at-this-very-moment reader. Thus, I love good quotes. And my favorite quotes are ones that have not been quite “found” yet or popularized. They are the quotes that I run into in the middle of a book or in the most unexpected part of a tv series. The quotes that are not on a plethora of Pins, Instagram posts, or captions yet.
Here are a few quotes that have inspired me and my work throughout recent months.
VISION WITHOUT EXECUTION IS HALLUCINATION.
-WALTER ISAACSON, LEONARDO DA VINCI
I recently started a study on Leonardo Da Vinci and it began with a book by Walter Isaacson. In the very first chapter for the book Isaacson refers to Da Vinci’s exploration in subjects across a spectrum of various genres. He describes Leonardo’s “susceptibility to fantasia” which sometimes resulted in unfinished work. While Isaacson later counters the statement, “vision without execution is hallucination” with, “skill without imagination is barren”, he has a great initial point.
So many times we dream up fantasies of creating, building, moving mountains even. But when do we make the first step? After how long is it considered too late to even begin? All too often I have found my exciting new idea dancing over the threshold of “too late” and “not exciting anymore”.
This quote stuck out so much to me, I block-printed it onto a huge piece of sketch paper then taped it over the TV in my bedroom for several days while completing my 25-piece Resort 2020 collection. The more I read this quote over and over, the more it inspired me to get to work. I don’t want to be a hallucinator, I want to be a do-er.
NOTHING BOLD OR MAGNIFICENT IS BUILT FROM FEAR.
-OLIVER GOLDSTICK, THE COLLECTION
Sometime in 2017 I bingewatched the entire series, The Collection on Amazon Prime Video. The series is set in post World War II Paris and follows the story of fictional fashion house, Paul Sabine. Sabine is excited to revitalize fashion and celebrate women again, even in the stark aftermath left behind by the war. His house begins to make extravagant couture dresses which receive strong dissatisfaction from those who are still recovering financially. Using large amounts of fabric to make gowns is quite frivolous to those who didn’t grasp the need for fashion. When faced with remarks that he should “tone it down” and “take a step back” in his creative endeavors, Paul exclaims with fierceness, “Nothing bold or magnificent is built from fear!”. Design a brilliant collection, he did. In the series anyway.
This quote is the epitomy of what I believe. One should never hold back or derail their direction because of fear. Whether it be fear of what others think, failure, or anything. Fear is a parasite that has stolen many precious what-if’s, and I don’t intend to surrender any of mine.
THE TREASURES THAT ARE INSIDE YOU ARE HOPING YOU WILL SAY YES.
-ELIZABETH GILBERT, BIG MAGIC
I cannot stress enough how powerful this book Big Magic was for me. If you are in a creative field, chances are you may have heard of it. Author Elizabeth Gilbert tells a story about a poet and professor named Jack Gilbert. Prof. Gilbert was speaking to one of his students whom he asked what she wanted to do with her life. She commented that she hoped to be a writer. “He smiled at the girl with infinite passion and asked, ‘Do you have the courage? Do you have the courage to bring forth this work? The treasures that are hidden inside you are hoping you will say yes.’”
These words resonated with me so deeply. You know that europhoric moment when you see your work come to life? You know that brilliant spark you get when you create something just like you imagined, or even better? You know that proud moment when you show the world your work and it is well received? Those moments are just a few of many, waiting to be born.
Yes, there will be obstacles and rough roads, but rememeber the spellbinding words of Elizabeth Gilbert.
